VPN for YouTube: how to fix throttling in Russia
YouTube in Russia is throttled almost to a standstill. Here is why an ordinary VPN does not help and which protocols bring video speed back.
Why YouTube is slow
YouTube in Russia is not fully blocked β it is deliberately throttled. Internet providers use DPI equipment to limit the speed of video delivery from Google servers, so clips buffer endlessly, quality drops, and 4K video will not start at all.
The throttling works at the traffic level, not on your device, so changing the browser, clearing the cache or using a different YouTube app does not solve the problem.
Why an ordinary VPN does not help
Classic protocols β plain WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2 β have a recognisable signature of their own. DPI detects such a VPN and either throttles it just like YouTube or drops the connection, so video keeps buffering even with the VPN on.
What actually works
You need a VPN with protocols that disguise traffic and stay invisible to DPI:
- AmneziaWG β a fast WireGuard with obfuscation and minimal speed loss.
- VLESS Reality β traffic looks like an ordinary HTTPS visit to a website.
- Hysteria2 β runs over QUIC and holds speed well on unstable channels.
With such a protocol your traffic to YouTube is no longer different from ordinary browsing, the throttling is lifted, and video loads at full speed β up to 4K.
How to watch YouTube without buffering
- Connect a VPN with an anti-DPI protocol β AmneziaWG, VLESS Reality or Hysteria2.
- Pick the nearest server: the shorter the distance, the higher the speed and the lower the latency.
- If quality still fluctuates, switch the protocol or location in one tap.
Fiery VPN gives all four protocols in one subscription and servers in four countries with no speed limits or traffic caps β YouTube works in full quality.
