VPN on a router: one connection for every device at home

How to set up a VPN directly on a router so block bypass works on every device at once β€” the TV, set-top box, laptop and phones.

Why set up a VPN on a router

A VPN on the router protects the entire home network at once. You do not have to install an app on every device β€” block bypass works on the TV, the game console, the laptop and the phones automatically, as soon as they connect to Wi-Fi.

This is especially handy for devices where a VPN client cannot be installed at all β€” smart TVs, media boxes and consoles.

Which router will work

You need a router that supports WireGuard. Common options include Keenetic models, devices running OpenWrt firmware and MikroTik routers. AmneziaWG is not yet supported by every firmware, so plain WireGuard is more often used on a router.

How to set it up

  1. Make sure the router firmware has a WireGuard section or a VPN client.
  2. Open the WireGuard configuration in your account β€” as a file or as text.
  3. Create a new WireGuard interface on the router and transfer the keys and the server address from the configuration into it.
  4. Enable the interface and, if needed, specify which traffic to send through the VPN.

What to keep in mind

If your provider throttles plain WireGuard, it makes sense to keep the router VPN for some devices only and use an anti-DPI protocol through an app on the phones. That gives the home the most flexible setup.

Fiery VPN provides a ready WireGuard configuration that can be transferred into a router β€” one connection covers every device in the home.
